To introduce students to the concept of persuasive writing by engaging them in a fun and interactive debate about their favorite toys.
Gather the Students: Invite all the students to sit in a circle on the carpet. Explain that today they are going to learn how to persuade someone to think their toy is the best!
Introduce the Topic: Start with a question: "If you had to convince someone to play with your favorite toy, how would you do it?" Give students a moment to think and share their ideas.
Show Picture Cards: Present the pictures of various toys one by one. As each picture is shown, ask the students, “Who thinks this toy is the best?” and encourage them to raise their hands.
The Great Debate: Divide the class into two groups: those who support the toy (Yes!) and those who do not (No!). Give them a few minutes to brainstorm reasons for their opinions.
Sticky Note Persuasion: Hand out sticky notes. Ask each student to write down one reason why their chosen toy is the best. For those who may need assistance, you can provide sentence starters like:
Share and Place Notes: Invite students to come up and stick their notes under the appropriate column on the poster board. Read some of their reasons aloud to the class to showcase persuasive writing in action.
Wrap-Up: Conclude the activity by highlighting what makes a good persuasive argument and relate it to writing. Explain that they will soon be learning how to write their own persuasive pieces about their favorite toys!
Now that everyone has shared their awesome reasons, it’s time to turn those great ideas into sentences! Let’s get started on our very own persuasive writing today!
By starting the lesson with an engaging debate and fun activity, students will find the concept of persuasive writing exciting and relatable, setting a positive tone for their learning experience.
