Setting the Scene

Today, we are stepping into the amazing world of fractions—the building blocks of parts and wholes! Imagine we are all workers at a magical factory that produces delicious fraction treats. Our job is to explore how we can slice, share, and combine these treats in fun ways.

The Fraction Treats

Let’s imagine we have a giant pizza in our factory. This isn’t just any pizza; it’s a pizza that can magically change size based on how many friends we have!

• If it's just you, you get the whole pizza!
• If you have one friend joining you, you’ll need to slice it into two equal parts, so you'll both get half a pizza each! That’s two fractions: your half (1/2) and your friend's half (1/2).
• And if a third friend comes along, what do you think we'll need to do? Yes! We’ll slice it into three equal parts—now that's one-third (1/3) for each!

Engage with the Mystery Box

To make things even more exciting, I have a mystery box in front of me. Inside, there are various fraction treats: some chocolate bars, slices of cake, and pieces of fruit. Each treat represents a different fraction!

• As I pull out each item, I want you to think about how you would share it with your friends.
• For example, if I pull out a chocolate bar divided into four pieces, how would we share it among three people?
