Capacity Exploration: A Fun Introduction for Year 2

Lesson Starter: The Mysterious Measuring Quest

Objective:

Today, we will embark on a thrilling adventure to discover capacity—the amount of liquid a container can hold!

Introduction: The Key to the Treasure Chest

Imagine you are a brave explorer on a quest for hidden treasure! Legend has it that the treasure chest of Mr. Wigglebones, the famous pirate, is filled with sparkling gems—however, to unlock the treasure chest, you must solve a special puzzle about capacity!

Setting the Scene:

Gather your students in a circle and present a colourful, sealed treasure chest (it could be a decorated box) in front of them. As you unveil the treasure chest, say:

"Welcome, young adventurers! Today, we have a very important mission. Inside this treasure chest lies a magnificent prize, but it can only be unlocked by answering the questions about how much liquid our special containers can hold."

Engaging Activity: The Liquid Measurement Challenge

  1. Materials Needed:

    • A variety of containers (cups, bottles, bowls) in different shapes and sizes
    • Jugs filled with water (or any liquid)
    • Measuring cups
    • Towels for spills
  2. Task Explanation:

    • Divide students into small groups and assign each group a container.
    • Each group will fill their container with water using the measuring cups.
    • Before pouring, they should guess how many cups or jugs of water it will take to fill their container.
  3. Exploring Capacity:

    • Once they have filled the container, gather back as a class.
    • Discuss their predictions and the actual amount of liquid it took to fill their container. Ask questions such as:
      • "Was your guess close?"
      • "Which container holds the most water? Which one holds the least?"

Conclusion: The Unlocking of the Treasure

End the lesson by saying:

"Congratulations, explorers! You have now unlocked Mr. Wigglebones' treasure chest! In here, we have our own sparkling treasure: a fun sticker for each of you as a reward for your hard work in understanding capacity!"

Follow-Up Thought:

To extend the learning, encourage students to find objects at home and compare their capacities or even create their own measuring experiments.

With this fun-filled beginning, your lesson on capacity will engage Year 2 students and set the stage for a day of exploration and discovery in mathematics!
