To engage students in exploring emotions and physical expressions, setting the stage for our devising lesson.
To kick off today's lesson on devising, we will start with a creative warm-up called "Emotion Charades." This activity will help students express emotions without words and become comfortable in front of their peers, fostering collaboration and imaginative thinking.
Divide the Class: Split the class into small groups of three to five students.
Prepare Emotion Cards: Before the lesson, prepare cards with different emotions written on them (e.g., joy, anger, surprise, sadness, fear, etc.).
Demonstration: Select one student from a group to act out an emotion from the card they draw without using any spoken words. The rest of the group will guess the emotion being portrayed.
Interactive Participation: Allow each student a turn to act out the emotion. Encourage the audience to pay attention to body language and facial expressions.
Discuss: After all students have participated, hold a brief class discussion. Ask questions like:
Conclude the warm-up by explaining how this exercise relates to devising. Emphasise that devising requires not only creativity but also the ability to communicate ideas and emotions effectively. Transition into the main lesson by discussing how today's work will involve devising a short performance piece that expresses a theme or message through improvisation and collaboration.
This engaging start not only warms up the students physically and mentally for the task ahead but also establishes a collaborative environment vital for the devising process in drama.
