Subject: History

Grade: Year 1

Duration: 30 minutes

Learning Objectives

Materials Needed

Introduction (5 minutes)

  1. Start with a Question
Begin by asking the students, "What is technology?" Encourage them to share their ideas and examples of technology they see every day.

  2. Introduce the Topic
Explain that technology is anything that helps us do things easier or faster. Tell them the lesson will explore how technology has changed over time.

Main Activity (20 minutes)

Part 1: Old vs. New Technology (10 minutes)

  1. Show Pictures
Display pictures of various technologies from the past and present. For example:

    • Telephones: Show a rotary phone and a smartphone.
    • Computers: Show a typewriter and a modern laptop.
    • Transportation: Show a horse-drawn carriage and a modern car.
  2. Class Discussion
As you show each picture, ask guiding questions:

    • "What do you think this is?"
    • "How do you think people used this technology?"
    • "How is this different from what we have today?"

Part 2: Create a Comparison Chart (10 minutes)

  1. Group Work
Divide students into small groups and give them chart paper and markers. Each group will choose one piece of old technology and one modern technology to compare.

  2. Chart Creation
    Instruct groups to list:

    • Old Technology: What was it? How did it work?
    • New Technology: What is it? How does it work? After 5-7 minutes, have each group present their comparison to the class.

Conclusion (5 minutes)

  1. Wrap-Up Discussion
Bring the class back together for a quick review. Use the class comparison chart to summarise the differences and similarities between old and new technology.

  2. Reflect
Ask students to think about how technology helps them in their everyday lives. For example, “How do we use technology in our homes or schools?”

  3. Closing Activity
Finish by having each student share their favourite piece of technology, either old or new, and a short reason why they like it.
