National Curriculum Alignment

This lesson aligns with the UK national curriculum by emphasizing measurement and the use of practical activities to reinforce mathematical concepts.

Lesson Structure

Step Number Step Title Length Details
1 Introduction to Conversion 5 mins Explain the relationship between cm and mm (1 cm = 10 mm). Use the ruler as a visual aid.
2 Guided Practice 10 mins Work through a few examples of converting cm to mm together using the whiteboard.
3 Independent Practice 10 mins Provide the student with worksheets to convert several measurements from cm to mm. Assist as needed.
4 Physical Activity Break 5 mins Engage in a quick physical activity, such as passing a small exercise ball while counting to reinforce numbers.
5 Review and Homework Assignment 5 mins Review the answers together, discussing any mistakes. Assign homework: more conversion problems to complete.

Homework

The student will complete a worksheet with additional cm to mm conversion problems at home. Review the homework the next lesson without requiring the student to present it to the class.

Introduction to Conversion

"Good morning! Today, we are going to learn something really exciting about measurements! We will focus on converting centimetres, which we often call cm, to millimetres, or mm.

Now, let’s start with some basics. Can anyone tell me how many millimetres are in one centimetre? That's right! There are 10 millimetres in one centimetre. So remember, for every 1 cm, we have 10 mm.

To help us with this, I have this ruler here. (Hold up the ruler). As you can see, one section of the ruler represents 1 cm, and if you look closely, you'll see that each cm is divided into 10 smaller sections. Those smaller sections are the mm.

Now, let’s put our minds to work!

Guided Practice

"Alright! Let's work on some examples together. I will write a few problems on the whiteboard, and we will solve them as a team!

The first question is: How many millimetres are in 3 cm?

I want you to think about what we just learned. Since 1 cm equals 10 mm, how can we find out how many millimetres are in 3 cm?

That's right! We take 3, and we multiply it by 10. So, what do we get?

Yes! 30 mm!

Let's try another one. How about 5 cm? What would that be in millimetres?

Great! 5 cm multiplied by 10 equals 50 mm.

Now, let’s do one more together. What about 2 cm?

Yes, that’s 20 mm! You all are doing a fantastic job, let’s keep going!"

Independent Practice

"Now, I have some worksheets for you! On these sheets, you will find several measurements in cm, and your task is to convert them to mm.

Take your time with each problem. Remember the multiplication rule we discussed! If you need any help, just raise your hand, and I’ll be there to assist you.

(Hand out the worksheets and walk around to offer support.)

I’ll give you 10 minutes to work on this. Off you go!"

Physical Activity Break

"Awesome job on your worksheets! Now, let’s take a quick break to stretch our legs and have some fun.

We’re going to play a little game with this exercise ball. I will pass the ball to you, and when you catch it, you’ll say a number in the order of our cm to mm conversion.

Let’s start with 1 cm! Who can tell me how many mm that is? That’s right! 10!

Now, who can give me the next number?

As we pass the ball around, let’s count! Ready? 1…(after a few passes) 2… (continue to guide them through the game).

Great job everyone! Let’s get back to our work!"

Review and Homework Assignment

"Now that we’re all energized, let’s review the answers to the worksheets you just completed.

I’d like us to go through the answers together. (Check answers on the board).

If anyone made a mistake, that’s perfectly okay! Mistakes are how we learn. Can anyone explain what went wrong on this problem?

Excellent! Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

For your homework, I’d like you to complete another worksheet with some more cm to mm conversion problems. Don’t worry, you won’t have to present it to the class next time, but we will go through it together just like today.

Great work today, everyone! I’m proud of how well you engaged with the lesson."

Physical break

Let's stretch and move, it's time for some fun,
A quick physical break before we’ve done!
Here’s a list of exercises, simple to do,
Follow along, and enjoy them too!

1. **Jumping Jacks** - Reach up high,
Legs out wide, let’s touch the sky!

2. **Squats** - Bend down low, like you're sitting in a chair,
Stand back up and breathe in the air!

3. **High Knees** - Lift those knees, up to your chest,
March in place, let’s put them to the test!

4. **Arm Circles** - Big and small, rotate those arms,
Forward and backward, using all your charms!

5. **Side Steps** - Move to the right, then step to the left,
Keep it steady and light, showing off your best!

6. **Toe Touches** - Reach for your toes, bend down low,
Stretch those hamstrings, let’s go, go, go!

7. **Wall Push-ups** - Find a wall, lean in with might,
Push away gently, let's do it right!

8. **March in Place** - Lift your feet, as high as you can,
Move those arms, let’s all be a fan!

9. **Lunges** - Step forward, drop down low,
   Alternate legs, take it slow!

10. **Pretend Rope Jumping** - Swing that rope, jump up high,
Let's get our hearts racing, reach for the sky!

Now take a breath, shake it out nice,
We’ve moved our bodies, and that’s quite a spice!
Back to our lesson, feeling fresh and bright,
Let’s conquer those conversions with all our might!
