Exploring the World Through Poetry: A Journey in Emotions

Lesson Introduction: A Poetic Adventure

Setting the Scene

Imagine you are standing at the edge of a vast forest, a place filled with the whispers of ancient trees and the gentle rustle of leaves. You're about to embark on a journey that will take you across continents and through cultures, all while experiencing the power of words that move the hearts of people everywhere. Today, we will dive into World Poetry, exploring how poets from around the globe express emotions and stories through their unique perspectives.

Interactive Hook: The "Poetry Postcard" Activity

To kickstart our lesson, let's engage in a fun, interactive activity that I like to call the "Poetry Postcard." Here’s how it works:

  1. Imagine a Destination: Close your eyes for a moment and think of a place in the world that has moved you or sparked your curiosity. It could be a bustling city market, a peaceful mountain range, or a lively beach.

  2. Create Your Postcard: On a piece of paper (or your digital device), design a postcard that depicts this destination. Use drawings, colours, or even collage with different materials if you have access to them. Be creative!

  3. Write a Short Poem: Below your visuals, write a 4-line poem inspired by the place you’ve chosen. Think about the feelings and images that come to mind. Use sensory details—what do you see, hear, and feel?

  4. Share and Reflect: Once everyone has created their postcards, we'll pair up and share our poetry with a partner. Discuss how your chosen place inspired your work and how your emotions were expressed through poetry.

Transition to Lesson Exploration

As we share our poems, notice how each of us interprets the theme of “Moving”—whether it's through physical journeys, emotional experiences, or cultural reflections. This will set the stage for our exploration of world poetry today, where we’ll read and analyse different poets’ works that aim to move us in various ways.

By starting our lesson with a personal and creative activity, we tap into our emotions and imaginations, priming our minds for a deeper understanding of how poetry can transport us across the globe and into the hearts and minds of others. Let’s get started on this poetic journey!
