Lesson Introduction: Community Cohesion

Welcome and Warm-Up Activity

Objective: Engage students in thinking about community and its importance while setting a positive tone for the lesson on community cohesion.

Step 1: Icebreaker – "The Community Web"

Materials Needed:

Instructions:

  1. Gather the Class: Have students sit in a circle so everyone can see each other.

  2. Explain the Activity: Tell the students that they will be creating a "web" that represents their connections to their community.

  3. Pass the Yarn:

    • Start with the ball of yarn in your hands. Introduce yourself and share one aspect of your community that is important to you (e.g., a local charity, a park, a cultural event).
    • Holding onto the end of the yarn, throw the ball to a student across the circle, but keep hold of the string.
    • The student who catches the ball shares their connection to the community and then tosses the ball to someone else, while holding onto their portion of the string.
    • Repeat this until everyone has shared.
  4. Observe the Connections:

    • After everyone has participated, take a moment to look at the "web" you've created. Discuss how the different strands represent the connections and relationships that bind your community together.
  5. Optional Extension:

    • If time allows, each student can add a small object to their portion of the yarn (like a token or small piece of paper) that represents their unique contribution to the community.

Step 2: Transition to Lesson Topic

Discussion Prompt: After completing the web, ask the students how they feel about being part of a community. What are some challenges that can arise within a community? What are the benefits of strong community cohesion?

Purpose: This engaging introduction not only breaks the ice but also visually emphasises the importance of interconnectedness in a community, setting a perfect stage for delving into the concepts of community cohesion.

Outcome: By using this creative activity, students will feel more comfortable sharing their thoughts and experiences, making them more receptive to learning about the critical role they can play in fostering community cohesion.
