To spark curiosity and excitement in our preschoolers about the curriculum, we will start our lesson with an interactive Curriculum Treasure Hunt. This engaging activity will help children familiarise themselves with the different areas of learning they will encounter throughout the year.
Introduction: Gather the children in a circle. Explain that today, they are going to go on a special treasure hunt to discover the different 'learning treasures' in their classroom.
Explain the Concept: Briefly introduce the idea of a curriculum as a 'map'–just like the treasure map they will use. It helps guide their learning journey throughout the year, ensuring they explore many exciting areas!
Treasure Hunt: Hand out the treasure maps, and let the children team up in pairs. As they travel from one station to another following the map, encourage them to look for the treasures and engage in a related short activity at each station:
Reflection: Once all stations are explored, gather back in a circle. Ask each child to share one thing they discovered about a specific area of learning. This will help reinforce what they learned and allow them to express their excitement.
By beginning the lesson with a Curriculum Treasure Hunt, preschoolers will gain a fun and engaging way to understand the concept of a curriculum. This activity not only ignites their curiosity but also lays the groundwork for ongoing discussions about what they will learn throughout the year. Emphasising exploration and teamwork, this introduction will set a positive tone for the lesson to follow!
