Welcome to our maths lesson! Today, we're diving into the fascinating world of writing expressions. Before we jump into the rules and techniques, let’s warm up our minds with a creative activity that will get us thinking like mathematicians.
Imagine you have a mystery box in front of you. Inside the box, there are different objects represented by numbers and letters. For example, there may be:
You and your friends have discovered that these objects can be combined in various ways to create new expressions. However, to open the box, you need to write an expression that represents the total value of your mystery objects.
Split into Groups: Form small groups of 3-4 students.
Choose Your Objects: Each group will select at least two different objects from the list above (you can add your own creative shapes if you like!).
Write Your Expression: Work together to write an expression that represents the total value. Consider if you want to add the numbers together, multiply them, or even use the variable x creatively.
For example, if your group chooses the blue marble and the yellow triangle, your expression could be represented as: [ 3 + x ] or [ 3x ]
After writing your expression, each group will present their expression to the class. Share the objects you chose, explain your reasoning, and challenge your classmates to evaluate your expression.
At the end of this activity, not only will you have a better understanding of writing expressions, but you'll also realise how much fun maths can be when we use our creativity! So, let's gather around the mystery box and unlock the power of expressions together!
