To help children express and explore their own identity through creative art activities, allowing them to share who they are with their peers.
Begin the lesson by gathering the children in a circle. This creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, encouraging participation and sharing.
Hold up a large, colourful picture frame. Tell the children, “This is a magical frame that shows who you are! Everything inside it tells a story about YOU!”
Show them a few examples of self-portraits and collages made by other children. Say, “Look at how these children used colours, shapes, and pictures to tell us all about themselves. What stories do you want to show us?”
Ask open-ended questions to get the children's imaginations flowing:
Explain that they will create a “Me” Collage. Provide each child with a square piece of cardstock and an assortment of art materials such as crayons, coloured paper, stickers, and magazines.
Let them know that once they finish, they will have the chance to share their collage with the class, helping everyone get to know them better. This will encourage them to think deeply about their individuality and what they want to express.
Wrap up the introduction by saying, “Let’s celebrate all the colours, shapes, and stories that make each of us special. Are you ready to create your masterpiece?”
This engaging start will help foster a sense of community and encourage self-expression in a fun and interactive way. Happy creating!
