Lesson Outline
Introduction (5 minutes)
- Engage Students: Pose the question, “Why is grammar important in writing?” Allow students to share their thoughts.
- Introduction to Parts of Speech: Briefly define and list the eight parts of speech (noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, interjection) on the board.
Direct Instruction (10 minutes)

Explain Each Part of Speech:
- Noun: A person, place, thing, or idea (e.g., dog, city, love)
- Pronoun: A word that replaces a noun (e.g., he, she, it)
- Verb: A word that describes an action or state of being (e.g., run, is)
- Adjective: A word that describes a noun (e.g., blue, quick)
- Adverb: A word that modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb (e.g., quickly, very)
- Preposition: A word that shows the relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and other words in a sentence (e.g., in, at, during)
- Conjunction: A word that connects clauses or sentences (e.g., and, but, or)
- Interjection: A word that expresses emotion (e.g., wow, ouch)

Show Examples: Provide examples for each part of speech in a sample sentence. Highlight each part in different colors on the board.
Guided Practice (5 minutes)
- Hand out a worksheet with sentences that are missing parts of speech.

Independent Practice (5 minutes)
- Sentence Creation: Ask students to write five sentences of their own, using at least one occurrence of each part of speech learned.
