Students will explore the concept of light and color through an engaging story and hands-on activity, understanding how we see colors in the world around us.
Begin by dimming the classroom lights and gathering the students in a circle. Hold up a mysterious box.
“Good morning, explorers! Today, we are going to solve a mystery! I found this box in the school attic, and it is filled with a strange, glowing light! But... something is missing. Can anyone guess what it might be?”
Encourage students to make guesses about what could be missing – it could be colors, objects, or even magical creatures!
After a short discussion, share with the class:
“Well, my adventure of trying to uncover the mystery of this box led me to discover something amazing about light! It can create colors! Today, we’re going to learn why we see the beautiful colors in nature.”
Take out the flashlight and white paper.
“Let’s test out our own light! When I shine this flashlight on the white paper, what do we see?”
Students should respond with their observations. Show how white light can reveal different colors when passed through colored cellophane or a prism.
Place the colored cellophane on the table and let students experiment by shining the flashlight through each color, observing how the light changes.
“By the end of this lesson, we’ll figure out why our mystery box was glowing and discover the colors it missed!”
"Are you ready to dive deeper into the world of light and colors? Let’s set our explorer hats on and start our investigation together!"
Encourage students to think critically about their observations and findings, setting the stage for deeper learning in the natural science lesson focused on light and color!
