Lesson Outline
1. Introduction to Reading Fluency (5 minutes)
- Begin the lesson by asking students what they think reading fluency means.
- Write their responses on the whiteboard and guide them toward a definition.
Example definition: "Reading fluency is the ability to read a text smoothly and quickly while understanding what it means."
2. Importance of Fluency (5 minutes)
- Discuss the importance of fluency in reading. Explain how it helps with comprehension and enjoyment of reading.
- Share examples of how fluent readers sound compared to non-fluent readers (e.g., stumbling over words vs. reading smoothly).
3. Practicing Reading Fluency (15 minutes)
A. Choral Reading (7 minutes)
- Introduce choral reading as a fun way to practice fluency.
- Choose a short text or poem and read it aloud to the class, modeling fluent reading.
- Invite the students to read the text together as a group, focusing on expression and pace.
B. Partner Reading (8 minutes)
- Pair students up and provide each pair with the same text.
- Instruct them to take turns reading the text to each other while one reads and the other listens.
- Encourage them to count the number of words read accurately in one minute using a stopwatch, then switch roles.
4. Closing Discussion (5 minutes)
- Gather students together to discuss what they learned about fluency during the lesson.
- Ask students how they felt during the choral and partner reading activities.
