To engage Kindergarten students in the magic of reading by sparking their imagination and curiosity about stories.
Begin the lesson with a gentle invitation to sit in a circle. Dim the classroom lights slightly and play soft instrumental music in the background to create a cozy atmosphere.
Bring out the decorated cardboard box (treasure chest) and place it in the center of the circle. Ask the students if they’ve ever been on an adventure. Encourage them to share brief tales of their own adventures.
After discussing adventures, explain that reading is like going on a new adventure every time we open a book! Slowly open the treasure chest to reveal the colorful storybook nestled inside, perhaps with a slight dramatic flair.
Begin to read the title of the book aloud while saying, “Inside this book, there are surprises waiting for us! Who wants to find out what adventures we’ll go on today?” Show them the cover and ask open-ended questions about what they see.
Before diving into reading, introduce a few props related to the story. Pass them around for students to touch and feel. Ask, “What part do you think each of these props plays in our adventure?” This helps students connect tangible items to the upcoming story.
Finally, encourage students to gather around as you announce, “Let’s unlock the treasure of this story together!” Open the book and begin reading, using animated voices and expressions to bring the characters to life.
Utilizing this lesson introduction, students will not only feel excited about reading but will also foster a sense of community and teamwork as they embark on their story adventure together!
