Lesson Outline
Introduction (5 Minutes)
- Greeting & Warm-Up: Start with a brief introduction of the lesson. Gather students in a circle and lead them through a 3-minute warm-up that includes:
- Arm circles
- Leg swings
- Gentle stirs and stretches for the upper body
- Discussion: Explain the benefits of lifting training, including building strength, enhancing endurance, improving posture, and promoting overall health.
Safety Guidelines (5 Minutes)
- Demonstrate Proper Posture: Show students how to maintain a neutral spine and stable stance while lifting.
- Equipment Safety: Discuss the importance of using the right weight and checking equipment before use.
- Buddy System: Emphasize the importance of having a partner when lifting heavier weights for assistance.
Lifting Techniques (10 Minutes)
-
Basic Exercises: Introduce three fundamental lifting exercises:
- Bicep Curls
- Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a weight in each hand, arms fully extended.
- Curl weights to shoulders while keeping elbows close to the body.
- Squats
- Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, weight held at chest level.
- Bend knees and lower the body as if sitting in a chair, keeping the back straight.
- Overhead Press
- Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, weights at shoulder height.
- Press weights overhead while maintaining a firm stance.
-
Practice: Pair students up to practice these exercises. Rotate every 2 minutes so students get an opportunity to practice each lift with proper form.
Circuit Training (5 Minutes)
-
Set Up Stations: Create a small circuit with the three exercises. Each station will last for 1 minute:
- Station 1: Bicep Curls
- Station 2: Squats
- Station 3: Overhead Press
-
Timing: Use a timer to signal when to rotate to the next station. Encourage students to count their repetitions.
Cool Down and Reflection (5 Minutes)
- Cool Down Stretches: Lead students through a series of stretching exercises focused on the arms, legs, and back to cool down after the workout.
- Reflection: Gather students in a circle and discuss:
- What they learned about lifting.
- How they felt during the exercises.
- The importance of safe lifting practices.
Assessment
- Monitor students' participation and execution of exercises throughout the lesson. Provide constructive feedback on their form and technique.
- Evaluate understanding during the reflection session based on their ability to articulate safety and techniques learned.
Conclusion
By engaging in lifting training, students can learn the value of strength training while building a foundation for lifelong fitness habits. Encourage them to practice these techniques safely whether in a gym setting or at home with appropriate supervision.
