Introduction to Kiwiana

Kia ora, tamariki ma! Today, we’re going to embark on a super fun adventure into the heart of Kiwiana! Kiwiana is all about the unique and special things that make New Zealand, Aotearoa, so wonderful and different from everywhere else in the world.

Let’s Start With a Mystery Box!

What You’ll Need:

A mystery box (this can be a decorated cardboard box)
Items or pictures related to New Zealand (like a kiwi bird toy, a paua shell, or a jandal)

How to Begin:

Gather your class in a circle. Sit down so everyone can see the mystery box.
Introduce the mystery box. “Inside this box, I have some special objects that represent New Zealand. Can anyone guess what Kiwiana means?”
Pass the Box Around! Allow each student to take turns pulling out an item from the box.
- Ask the class: “What do you think this item is? How does it relate to New Zealand?”
- Encourage students to share their thoughts and connections to Kiwiana.
Reveal the Story. After each item, share a fun fact or a short story about it. For example:
- For the kiwi bird toy, you could explain how it’s a symbol of New Zealand and that New Zealanders are often called “Kiwis.”
- For the jandal, talk about how it’s a popular shoe in summer and is great for going to the beach!

After our mystery box adventure, let’s celebrate Kiwiana by creating our own artwork! This can include:
