Lesson Plan: Understanding Fractions
Subject
Mathematics
Grade
7
Duration
30 minutes
Objectives
- Students will understand and be able to identify proper and improper fractions.

- Students will learn how to convert improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa.

- Students will practice performing basic operations with fractions (addition and subtraction).

Materials Needed
- Whiteboard and markers

- Fraction manipulatives (fraction strips or circles)

- Worksheets with practice problems

- Projector (optional for visual aids)

Lesson Outline
Introduction (5 minutes)
- Begin by introducing the topic of fractions. Ask the students to share what they know about fractions and give examples (e.g., pizza slices, measuring cups).

- Explain the difference between proper and improper fractions, and introduce the concept of mixed numbers.

Presentation (10 minutes)
-
Defining Fractions:
- A proper fraction has a numerator smaller than its denominator (e.g., 3/4).

- An improper fraction has a numerator that is equal to or larger than its denominator (e.g., 5/4).

- A mixed number combines a whole number with a proper fraction (e.g., 1 1/4).

-
Conversion:
- Demonstrate how to convert an improper fraction to a mixed number:
- Divide the numerator by the denominator.

- The quotient becomes the whole number, and the remainder is the new numerator.

- Show how to convert a mixed number into an improper fraction:
- Multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the numerator.

- The result becomes the new numerator over the original denominator.

Guided Practice (10 minutes)
Independent Practice (5 minutes)
Closure (Optional, 5 minutes)
- Review the answers to the practice problems as a class.

- Answer any remaining questions from students.
