Lesson Plan: Elements of Art
Subject: Art
Grade: 1
Duration: 30 minutes
Topic: Elements of Art
Lesson Objective
Students will be able to identify and describe the four basic elements of art: line, shape, color, and texture. They will engage in activities that reinforce these concepts and reflect on their learning through a homework assignment.
Materials Needed
- Drawing paper
- Crayons or colored pencils
- Samples of artwork (images of different styles)
- Textures for tactile exploration (e.g., fabric, leaves, sandpaper)
Introduction (5 minutes)
-
Greet the Students:
- Welcome the students to the art class.
-
Introduce the Topic:
- Ask students if they know what "art" means.
- Show them a few examples of artwork and invite them to describe what they see.
-
Introduce the Elements of Art:
- Explain that all art is made up of basic building blocks called elements. Today, we will talk about 4 basic elements:
Direct Instruction (15 minutes)
Line (3 minutes)
- Definition: A line is a mark made by a moving point.
- Activity: Have students draw different kinds of lines on their paper (straight, zig-zag, curved).
Shape (3 minutes)
- Definition: A shape is a closed line that creates an area.
- Activity: Ask students to draw shapes such as circles, squares, and triangles.
Color (4 minutes)
- Definition: Color comes from light and can create feelings.
- Activity: Discuss primary colors (red, blue, yellow) and secondary colors (green, orange, purple). Have each student color a picture using their favorite colors.
Texture (5 minutes)
- Definition: Texture is how something feels or looks like it feels (smooth, rough, soft).
- Activity: Pass around texture samples. Students can describe each texture, then draw something that represents that texture.
Guided Practice (5 minutes)
- Activity: Conduct a quick group activity where students categorize images of different artwork based on the element they see (line, shape, color, texture).
- Encourage students to share their thoughts on why they chose each element for the artwork displayed.
Independent Practice (2 minutes)
- Hand out drawing paper and crayons. Instruct students to create their own piece of art that includes all four elements discussed: at least one line, one shape, a variety of colors, and show some texture.
Conclusion (3 minutes)
- Review: Quickly summarize the four elements of art and ask students to share their drawings with a partner.
- Transition: Explain that they will have a homework assignment to complete.
Homework Assignment
Instructions: Draw a picture at home that uses all four elements of art. Label each part in your drawing with the corresponding element (Line, Shape, Color, Texture).
Tasks:
- Create a drawing that includes:
- At least 3 different lines.
- 3 different shapes.
- 3 different colors.
- One representation of texture.
Correct Answers:
- Line: Different types of lines used in the drawing can be annotated.
- Shape: Identified shapes like a circle, square, etc. should be labeled.
- Color: Identify colors correctly used in the drawing.
- Texture: Indicate where textures were applied or represented (e.g., rough tree bark).
Reflection
Encourage students to think about how the elements of art make their own creations special and how they see them in the world around them.
