Art Lesson Plan: Exploring Texture
Grade Level: 3
Topic: Texture
Duration: 30 Minutes
Objective
Students will explore the concept of texture in art, understand how to identify and create different textures, and express their creativity through textured art-making activities.
Materials Needed
- Various textured materials (e.g., sandpaper, fabric, bubble wrap, leaves, etc.)
- Construction paper
- Glue
- Scissors
- Crayons or markers
- Textured object for inspiration (e.g., a tree bark, a stone, etc.)
- Texture cards (cards with samples of different textures)
Standards
- Visual Arts Standard: Students will demonstrate an understanding of art concepts through the creation of art.
- Creativity: Students will express their ideas effectively through a variety of materials and techniques.
- Observation Skills: Students will enhance their ability to observe and describe textures in their surroundings.
Lesson Outline
Introduction (5 minutes)
- Begin by asking students, “What does texture mean?”
- Discuss their responses, guiding them toward the idea that texture refers to how something feels (smooth, rough, bumpy, etc.) and how it looks.
- Show a textured object for inspiration and describe its texture.
Direct Instruction (10 minutes)
- Introduce different types of textures:
- Tactile Texture: textures you can feel (e.g., rough, smooth, soft)
- Visual Texture: textures that you can see but not necessarily feel (e.g., patterns, designs):
- Display texture cards and ask students to touch and describe each texture.
- Explain how artists use texture to add interest and depth to their artwork. Discuss famous artworks that incorporate texture.
Guided Practice (5 minutes)
- Have students choose one textured card and discuss how they could replicate its texture using available materials.
- Guide them to brainstorm ideas for their own textured art piece, encouraging them to think about the types of textures they want to include.
Independent Activity (8 minutes)
- Distribute construction paper and a variety of textured materials.
- Instruct students to create a textured collage by pasting various textures onto the paper.
- Encourage them to layer materials and integrate both tactile and visual textures into their work.
Sharing and Closing (2 minutes)
- Allow a few students to share and describe their textured collages with the class.
- Ask them to explain the materials they used and the textures they created.
- Conclude by reinforcing the idea that texture is an important element in art.
Assessment
- Observe student participation and engagement during discussions and activities.
- Evaluate the completed textured collages for creativity and use of different textures.
- Provide feedback to students on their understanding of texture in their artworks.
Extensions
- For students who finish early, encourage them to create a second collage using only one texture or to write a short story about their textured piece.
Adaptations
- For students with special needs, provide adapted materials (e.g., larger pieces of textured materials or pre-cut shapes).
- Consider providing one-on-one assistance or pairing students for support during the collage-making activity.
Remember to celebrate the creativity and unique expressions of all students!
