To engage Grade 3 students in the world of reading through an exciting and interactive beginning to the lesson.
Materials Needed:
Begin the lesson by gathering students in a circle or at their desks. Hold up the colorful box and tell them that it’s a “Mystery Box” filled with surprises. Explain that inside are items that will help them embark on different reading adventures.
Example Prompt: "Good morning, everyone! Today we are going to dive into the magical world of reading, and I have this special Mystery Box that will help us on our adventure. I wonder what could be inside?"
Carefully take out each item one by one, and as you do, ask the children to guess which book or story it might be related to.
After revealing each item, briefly discuss the themes in books related to the items. For instance, connect the dinosaur to adventure stories, the wand to fantasy, or the stuffed animal to friendship.
Encourage students to share any books they've read that relate to the items. This promotes connection and excitement about reading.
Example Interaction: "Now that we have a little taste of adventure, who can tell us about a book they've read with dinosaurs or magic? Let’s create a list of stories that spark our imaginations!"
At the end of this engaging introduction, transition into the main reading lesson.
Example Transition: "Alright, adventurers, now that we have our imaginations warmed up, let’s grab our reading books and see what new surprises await us in today’s stories!"
By starting the lesson with the Mystery Box, you capture students' curiosity and make reading feel like an adventure, setting a positive tone for the rest of the lesson. Happy reading!
