Jumping into Skip Counting!
Introduction to the Lesson
Hello, young mathematicians! Today, we are going to jump into the exciting world of skip counting! But before we begin, let’s warm up our bodies and our brains with a fun activity!
Warm-Up Activity: The Number Hop
What You Need:
- A clear space in the classroom or outside.
- Number cards (2, 4, 6, 8, 10) placed on the ground or on a large piece of paper.
Instructions:
- Set Up: Spread the number cards in a line, leaving some space between each card.
- Jumping Time: Explain to the students that they are going to take a big hop from one number to the next! Instead of hopping on every number, they will hop on only the even numbers (2, 4, 6, 8, 10).
- Counting Together: As each student hops from one number to the next, they will say the number out loud. For example, hop to the 2, then to the 4, saying "2, 4" as they jump!
- Group Challenge: After everyone has had a turn, challenge the class to count together as they skip through the numbers in their jumps!
Connecting the Lesson
Discussion Questions:
- What pattern do you notice in the numbers 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10?
- How did it feel to skip over some numbers and land on others?
Lesson Goals
By engaging in the Number Hop, students will:
- Understand the concept of skip counting by twos.
- Begin to recognize patterns in numbers.
Ready, Set, Count!
Now that we've warmed up, let's dive deeper into skip counting using fun activities, games, and storytelling! Remember, counting can be a fun journey, just like our big hops today! Are you ready to count? Let’s go!
