Introduction to Expectations

"Good morning, class! Today, we are going to talk about something very important – our classroom expectations. Can anyone tell me what ‘expectations’ mean? [Pause for responses] Yes, expectations are what we hope for and what we need to make our classroom a great place to learn.

Having clear expectations helps us understand how we should behave and support each other. Why do you think it’s important to have rules and expectations in our classroom? [Encourage responses] Exactly! They help create a positive learning environment where everyone feels safe and respected."

Distribute Expectation Cards

"Now, I have something for each of you. I’m going to hand out these expectation cards. [Distribute the cards] On this card, I would like you to write down three things you expect from our classroom this year.

These could be things you want from your teacher or your classmates. For example, you might want everyone to listen when someone is speaking. Use the markers or colored pencils provided to make your card nice and colorful too! You have five minutes to complete this. Ready? Go!"

Independent Work

"Okay everyone, let’s focus on our expectation cards. Think carefully about what you really want to achieve this year in our classroom. Remember, your expectations can really help shape how we learn together. You have ten minutes to fill out your cards. If you need any help, just raise your hand."

[Circulate the room to provide support as needed.]

Class Discussion

"Time’s up! Now that we’ve all had a chance to think about our expectations, let’s share them. I want you to pair up with a partner sitting next to you. Take turns sharing your expectations with each other. After you share, discuss why each expectation is important to you. You have five minutes for this discussion!"

[Allow students time to work in pairs. After five minutes, call them back together.]

Collect/Random Check of Expectation Cards

"I hope you all enjoyed sharing your expectations! Now, I’d like to collect your expectation cards. Please pass them to the front or hand them to me directly. If you’re feeling shy, I will also do a random check where I pick a few cards to see how you’ve done. Remember, this is just to see your thoughts, and it’s not graded!"

[Collect the cards and/or conduct the random check.]

Conclude and Reflect

"Before we end for the day, let’s reflect on what we discussed! I heard some great expectations today, like being respectful, listening, and helping one another. These are key to making our classroom a wonderful place to learn!

Does anyone have any questions about our expectations or anything we discussed today? [Pause for questions] Great! As a reminder, I encourage you to share your expectations with your family at home tonight. Maybe you can come up with a family expectation that can also help you when you’re at school.

I’m excited to start the year with these expectations in place. Have a wonderful day, everyone!"

[End the lesson with a positive and encouraging tone.]
