Lesson Plan: Butterfly Lifecycle
Duration: 30 minutes
Grade Level: Preschool / Nursery
Topic: Butterfly Lifecycle
Objectives
- Students will understand the four stages of a butterfly's lifecycle: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and butterfly.
- Students will recognize the transformation process that butterflies undergo.
- Students will engage in creative activities to reinforce learning.
Materials Needed
- Picture cards of each stage of the butterfly lifecycle
- Construction paper
- Crayons or markers
- Scissors (for teacher use only)
- A butterfly lifecycle song (can be a simple melody)
- Handouts for homework
Lesson Procedure
Introduction (5 minutes)
- Start by gathering the students in a circle and showing them a picture of a butterfly.
- Ask the students what they know about butterflies. Record their responses on a whiteboard or chart paper.
- Explain that butterflies go through four special stages in their lives, just like people grow up!
Direct Instruction (10 minutes)
-
Egg Stage:
- Show a picture card of butterfly eggs.
- Explain that the lifecycle starts when butterflies lay eggs on leaves.
-
Caterpillar Stage:
- Show the picture card of a caterpillar (larva).
- Discuss how the eggs hatch into caterpillars, which eat leaves and grow bigger.
-
Chrysalis Stage:
- Present the picture card of a chrysalis (pupa).
- Explain that after eating enough, the caterpillar forms a chrysalis, where it transforms into a butterfly.
-
Butterfly Stage:
- Show the picture card of a beautiful butterfly.
- Describe how after several days, the butterfly comes out of the chrysalis.
Interactive Activity (10 minutes)
- Butterfly Lifecycle Craft:
- Distribute construction paper and coloring materials.
- Instruct students to create their own butterfly lifecycle diagram. They can draw each stage of the lifecycle in sequence.
- Encourage them to use their imagination and colors to make it unique.
Song & Movement (5 minutes)
- Teach the students a simple butterfly lifecycle song (to the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star"), for example:
Egg, caterpillar, chrysalis too,
Then a butterfly comes into view.
Flap your wings and float around,
Look how pretty, you are unbound!
Egg, caterpillar, chrysalis too,
Then a butterfly comes into view.
- Prompt them to act out the stages as they sing!
Conclusion (3 minutes)
- Recap the four stages of the butterfly lifecycle.
- Ask the students what stage they liked the most and why.
