Introduction (5 minutes)

  1. Start by gathering the students in a circle and showing them a picture of a butterfly.
  2. Ask the students what they know about butterflies. Record their responses on a whiteboard or chart paper.
  3. Explain that butterflies go through four special stages in their lives, just like people grow up!

Direct Instruction (10 minutes)

  1. Egg Stage:

    • Show a picture card of butterfly eggs.
    • Explain that the lifecycle starts when butterflies lay eggs on leaves.
  2. Caterpillar Stage:

    • Show the picture card of a caterpillar (larva).
    • Discuss how the eggs hatch into caterpillars, which eat leaves and grow bigger.
  3. Chrysalis Stage:

    • Present the picture card of a chrysalis (pupa).
    • Explain that after eating enough, the caterpillar forms a chrysalis, where it transforms into a butterfly.
  4. Butterfly Stage:

    • Show the picture card of a beautiful butterfly.
    • Describe how after several days, the butterfly comes out of the chrysalis.

Egg, caterpillar, chrysalis too,
Then a butterfly comes into view.
Flap your wings and float around,
Look how pretty, you are unbound!
Egg, caterpillar, chrysalis too,
Then a butterfly comes into view.
