Course Plan: Art for Grade 6 - Elements of Art and Principles of Design
Course Introduction
Welcome to the Grade 6 Art Course! In this course, students will explore the foundational concepts that form the basis of artistic creation—namely the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. The course is structured into five engaging lessons, each designed to help students not only understand these concepts but also apply them in their own artwork. Through a variety of activities, discussions, and hands-on projects, students will cultivate their creative skills and develop a deeper appreciation for art.
Lesson Plan Overview
Lesson 1: Introduction to the Elements of Art
Module 1: What are the Elements of Art?
- Overview of the 7 Elements of Art: Line, Shape, Color, Form, Space, Texture, and Value.
- Discussion on the importance of each element in creating art.
Activities:
- Group brainstorming session to identify examples of each element in nature and in artwork.
- Create a visual chart with images representing each element.
Lesson 2: Exploring Line and Shape
Module 1: Line and Shape
- Definition and types of lines: straight, curved, zigzag, etc.
- Different types of shapes: geometric vs. organic shapes.
Module 2: Application of Line and Shape
- Discuss how lines and shapes can express different feelings.
Activities:
- Create a line and shape collage using magazines and other materials.
- Draw a simple scene using various types of lines and shapes.
Lesson 3: The Role of Color and Texture
Module 1: Understanding Color
- Introduction to color theory: primary, secondary, tertiary colors.
- Warm vs. cool colors, and the emotions they evoke.
Module 2: Exploring Texture
- Definition of texture and its significance in artwork.
- Different techniques to create texture in art (e.g., using different materials).
Activities:
- Create a color wheel to understand relationships between colors.
- Experiment with different materials to create textured artwork.
Lesson 4: Form, Space, and Value
Module 1: Exploring Form and Space
- Discussion on three-dimensional forms (cubes, spheres, etc.) and space in art.
- How to create the illusion of space in a two-dimensional artwork.
Module 2: Understanding Value
- Introduction to value and its role in creating depth and contrast.
- Techniques for creating value through shading.
Activities:
- Craft a 3D form using basic materials such as clay or cardboard.
- Practice shading techniques in drawings to create depth.
Lesson 5: Principles of Design
Module 1: Introduction to Principles of Design
- Overview of the 7 Principles of Design: Balance, Contrast, Emphasis, Movement, Pattern, Rhythm, and Unity.
- Discussion on how principles work together with the elements of art.
Module 2: Applying Principles of Design
- Analyzing works of art to identify the use of design principles.
Activities:
- Create an artwork incorporating at least three different principles of design.
- Participate in a class critique to discuss and analyze each other’s work.
Course Conclusion
As we wrap up the course, we will hold a gallery exhibit showcasing students' artwork. Each student will present their work and discuss how they utilized the Elements of Art and Principles of Design in their creations. This will be an excellent opportunity to celebrate creativity and learn from each other.
