Welcome to a day of adventure and critical thinking! Today, we're transforming our classroom into a Math Escape Room, where our primary goal will be to solve intriguing problems and work together to "escape" the room before time runs out!
Before we dive into our math challenge, let me set the scene:
Imagine you and your friends are trapped in a mysterious room filled with treasures, but there's a catch! To unlock the door and escape, you must solve a series of math problems related to the topic of problem solving. Each problem you solve will reveal a clue that will take you one step closer to freedom!
Divide into Teams: You will be divided into small groups of 4-5 students. Each group will work together to uncover answers and clues.
Mystery Boxes: Each team will start with a locked box that contains a series of math challenges. You will need to work together to solve each problem and unlock the box.
Clue Cards: After you solve each math problem, you will receive a clue card that will help you figure out the combination to open the next box.
Time Limit: You will have 45 minutes to solve all the problems and escape the room. The clock is ticking – can you make it in time?
To kick things off and set the mood, we'll begin with a brief story:
You find yourself in an ancient library, filled with dusty books and strange artifacts. As you explore, you discover an old journal with a mysterious entry:
"To break free from these shackles of numbers, gather your minds and sharpen your wits. Solve the questions and uncover the truths hidden within. Only then will the door to freedom reveal itself."
Encourage all students to share their thoughts and feelings about the story. This will help pique their curiosity and engage them in the activity.
Once we wrap up our escape room challenge and you’ve made it out, we’ll gather to discuss what strategies worked best for your team and how problem-solving can apply to various aspects of life, not just math.
Get ready to put on your thinking caps and dive into the world of problem solving! Let the games begin!
