Lesson script

Introduction

"Buenos días, clase. Today, we're going to explore a very important topic in Spanish: 'Familia,' or family. To start, I want you to think about your own family. Can anyone tell me, in Spanish, how you would refer to your mother or father? (Pause for answers.) Great! Let's dive into the beautiful world of family vocabulary."

Vocabulary Presentation

"Now that we’ve sparked our thoughts on family, let's learn some key vocabulary. I will present a few family members in Spanish and I'll show you the corresponding pictures. (Using visual aids) First, we have ‘madre,’ which means mother. Can everyone repeat after me? (Wait for students to repeat). Excellent! Next, we have ‘padre’ for father. Let's say it together: ‘padre.’ Perfect!

Now, let's move on to ‘hermano,’ which means brother. (Assistive visual) Can you repeat? (Wait for response.) Great! Finally, we have ‘hermana,’ meaning sister. Repeat after me: ‘hermana.’ Fantastic job!

Let's see how many family member terms we can learn. Tell me, how do you say grandparent in Spanish? (Wait for responses.) Right, it's ‘abuelo’ for grandfather and ‘abuela’ for grandmother! These words will help you describe your families."

Interactive Activity

"Now that we have all this vocabulary, I want you to use it! I'm going to give each of you a printable card. On this card, I want you to write down members of your family using the Spanish words we just learned. For example, if you have a sister, write ‘hermana’ on your card. You have seven minutes to fill this out, so make sure to include everyone relevant in your family! Go ahead and begin!"

(Distribute printable cards and timer starts. Walk around to assist students if needed.)

Pair Share

"Okay, time is up! Now, I want you to pair up with the student next to you. Share your family members using the vocabulary from your cards. Ask each other questions about your families! For instance, you can ask, ‘¿Tienes hermanos?’ (Do you have brothers?). You have five minutes for this activity, so let's engage and have some fun!"

(Set the timer for five minutes and circulate around the class to observe conversations.)

Collect and Check

"Let’s wrap up our discussions! Now, I would like you to hand your cards to me. I will randomly collect them and do a quick check to make sure everyone filled out their family members. (Collect cards) Excellent work, everyone! I can already see some great vocabulary being used!"

Homework Assignment

"Before we end the lesson, I want to assign you some homework. You will be tasked with writing a short paragraph about your family, using at least five of the vocabulary words we learned today. For example, you could introduce each family member and say a little about what they do.

Please make sure to write in Spanish! This assignment is due at our next class, and I will check it. Does anyone have questions about the homework?"

(Pause for questions.)

"Perfect! To summarize, today we learned about family vocabulary, engaged in discussions about our families, and you'll have an assignment that helps reinforce what we've learned. ¡Excelente trabajo hoy! (Great job today!), and I'll see you next time!"
