Lesson Introduction: Exploring Money

Objective

Today, we are going to embark on an exciting adventure into the world of money! We'll learn about different types of coins, how to identify them, and how they are used in our everyday lives.

Attention Grabber: The Treasure Chest

Materials Needed:

Activity:

  1. Start with a Story: Gather the children around in a circle. Begin with a short story about a little character named Penny the Penguin, who loves to collect shiny coins.

"Once upon a time, in a snowy land, lived Penny the Penguin. Penny loved to explore her village and buy treats from the market. But she needed to learn all about the coins she found!"

  2. Reveal the Treasure Chest: After the story, show the class the Treasure Chest. Open it and let them peek inside at the coins.

"Penny has a secret treasure chest full of interesting coins! Can you help Penny learn more about them?”

  3. Hands-On Exploration: Allow the children to take turns picking out the coins from the chest. As they do, ask questions:

    • "What coin do you have?"
    • "How much do you think this coin is worth?"
    • "Can anyone find the shiny £2 coin?"
  4. Connecting to Real Life: Show them the picture of a shop or market. Ask them how they think Penny uses her coins when she visits the shop.

"What do you think Penny can buy with her coins? What do you like to buy at the shop?"

Transition to Learning

After the children have shared their thoughts, explain that today they will not only learn to recognise and name these coins, but they'll also play fun games that help them understand how money works in our everyday lives, just like Penny did in her village!

"Are you ready to join Penny on her adventure and become coin experts? Let's go!"

This engaging start will help capture their interest and set an exciting tone for the lesson ahead!
