To engage students' curiosity and encourage language use in a fun and interactive way as they learn new vocabulary.
Begin the lesson by displaying the Mystery Box at the front of the classroom. Explain to the students that inside the box are mysterious objects or images that are connected to today's vocabulary topic.
Script: "Good morning, class! Today, we're going to embark on a language adventure with a special Mystery Box! Inside this box are some exciting objects and images that we will use to learn new words and phrases. But there's a twist — I won’t tell you what’s inside just yet!"
Invite students to take turns reaching into the box (without looking) and pulling out one object/image at a time. Once an item is revealed, engage the class in a brief discussion:
Encourage students to express their ideas and guesses in English, fostering a safe environment for language practice.
Once several objects/images have been explored, introduce the vocabulary words associated with those items. Write them on the board and discuss their meanings and usage in sentences.
Example:
Give each student an index card to write a sentence using one of the vocabulary words learned from the Mystery Box discussion.
Wrap-Up: Conclude the introduction by reminding students that today’s lesson will dive deeper into these new vocabulary words through various engaging activities.
Script: "Great job, everyone! Today, we will not only learn these new words but also use them to describe our own experiences. Let’s get started!"
This engaging introduction sets an interactive tone for the lesson, encourages active participation, and introduces vocabulary in a memorable context. Students will feel excited and ready to learn!
