Objective: Grab students’ attention and spark their curiosity about the phases of the moon.
Imagine you are outside on a clear night, the stars twinkling brightly above you. As you tilt your head back to gaze at the moon, you notice something unusual. Some nights, it looks like a shining silver coin, while on others, it seems to disappear almost completely! What makes the moon change shape?
To kick off our lesson about the phases of the moon, we will embark on a Mini Moon Adventure! Here’s how we will do it:
Moon Phases Video Clip: Start by showing a short video (2-3 minutes) that showcases the different phases of the moon. Look for a fun and engaging animation that explains how the moon cycles through its phases.
Moon Phase Mystery: After watching the video, gather the students in a circle. Ask them to share what they noticed about the moon in the video. Prompt them with questions:
Hands-On Activity: Moon Phase Craft: After the discussion, provide each student with a black paper, a white and a yellow crayon, and a pair of scissors. Guide them to create their own moon phase model by cutting out circles and coloring them to represent the eight phases: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, last quarter, and waning crescent.
Discussion and Connection: Once they complete their crafts, have each student share their moon phases with the class, explaining what happens during each phase.
This engaging start will not only stimulate a conversation but also lay the groundwork for a deeper understanding of the phases of the moon. By participating in the Mini Moon Adventure, students will feel excited and motivated to learn more about our mysterious lunar companion!
Let's get started on our journey to unravel the mysteries of the moon! 🌙
