Welcome Circle

Objective:

To introduce students to basic Spanish greetings and foster a welcoming atmosphere in the classroom.

Opening Activity

The "Hello Song"

Materials Needed:

Instructions:

  1. Gather the Students: Have all the students sit in a circle on the floor. Make sure everyone can see each other and feels included.

  2. Introduce the Theme: Start with a warm smile and say, “¡Hola, amigos! Hoy vamos a aprender a saludar en español!” (Hello, friends! Today we are going to learn how to greet in Spanish!).

  3. Sing the Hello Song: Introduce a simple melody to sing the following song (to the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star"):

    Hola, hola, ¿cómo estás?
    Hola, hola, ¡vamos a jugar!
    Hola, hola, en español,
    Saludos que dan mucho amor.
    Hola, hola, ¿cómo estás?
    ¡Hola, amigos! ¡Vamos a jugar!
  4. Encourage Participation: As you sing, encourage the students to clap or use the hand drum to keep the beat. If you have scarves or ribbons, they can wave them during the song.

  5. Discussion Time: After the song, ask the students:

    • “¿Cómo decimos 'hello' en español?” (How do we say 'hello' in Spanish?)
    • Reinforce the word “Hola” while showing them their hands for waving.
