Crane Update - Preparing for the IAC
Dear Tim,
I regret not being able to attend the meeting in person, but I found the discussion online to be quite interesting. Concerning your inquiries, the PreIAC went well, and we received approval to proceed to the IAC, scheduled for June.
Regarding the crane, I am updating you with the necessary documents and information for the RFQ. You may download our current documents for the tendering, including Tech Specs, annexes, and a summary table, by clicking on the following link: Gijón EAF crane.
Currently, we have some doubts related to the definition of the crane. Our current request does not consider the handling of liquid steel with its specific performance level requirements for high-risk regulation cranes (EN 13135). However, if we confirm the handling of hot metal in the EAF, we would likely need to comply with the specific regulation.
Moreover, our semi-automatic mode of crane operation may pose another challenge. Please allow me to explain the process in detail:
- Two trucks will place the bucket in a predetermined position in the bay.
- The crane will be notified of which bucket to handle.
- It will verify the position and disposition of the bucket (3D) to ensure it is suitable for handling. If not, it will send a failure message of wrong disposition. If additional devices are required for checking, the crane supplier should consider them.
- The crane will hook the bucket with the main and auxiliary hoists under the main control room operator's monitoring, just like a "death man" button.
- Once lifted, the crane operator must validate the grab to continue the cycle automatically.
- Following a pre-established safety path, the crane will move to a position "ready to charge the EAF."
- In coordination with the opening of the roof of the EAF, the crane will discharge the bucket.
- Lastly, the crane will move away from the EAF to a safety position after being validated by the operator. The crane operator will validate each step, and another operator will check the "safety path" for any obstructions using a joystick as a "death man" button.
Please do not hesitate to reach out if you need further information.
Best regards,
