Erupting Fun: Introduction to Volcanoes

🌋 Let’s Explore Volcanoes!

Greetings, Little Explorers!

Kia ora, tamariki! Today, we’re going to go on an exciting adventure to discover something really cool—VOLCANOES! Can anyone tell me what a volcano is? (Pause for responses)

Storytime: Lani and the Bursting Volcano

To begin our journey, let’s listen to a short story about our friend Lani.

Once upon a time, in a beautiful land called Aotearoa, there lived a little girl named Lani. Lani loved adventures, and one day she heard a booming noise coming from the mountains. It was the sound of Mount Tongariro waking up! Lani ran to see what was happening.

As she climbed, she spotted smoke and lava bursting from the top of the mountain. "Wow!" she exclaimed. "That looks just like a giant bubbling pot of soup!" Lani learned that volcanoes can be very powerful and can create new land.

Let’s Have Some Fun!

Now, let’s take a moment to pretend we are mountain explorers just like Lani!

  1. Movement Activity:

    • Stand up and pretend to be a volcano that is waking up. Stretch your arms wide like the mountain and shimmy side to side. When I say "Erupt!," jump up and shout, "Boom!" like a volcano erupting.
  2. Art Time:

    • Grab your crayons or paints. Let’s draw Lani and her volcano! What colours do you think a volcano might have? (Encourage discussion about colours and creativity).
  3. Sing a Volcano Song:

    • Ready to sing a fun song? Let’s sing "I’m a Little Volcano" to the tune of "I’m a Little Tea Pot". (Create simple lyrics about volcanoes for the children to sing along)

Wrap Up Discussion:

Now that we’ve moved, drawn, and sung, let’s sit down and talk about what we’ve learned!

Closing Activity:

Before we close our lesson, everyone will get a chance to share their drawings and stories about volcanoes. Each time someone shares, let’s cheer and clap for our friends!

Ka Kite!

Great job today, little explorers! Get ready for more fun as we dive deeper into volcanoes this week. Ka kite anō! (See you again!)

With this lively beginning, your preschool lesson on volcanoes will be engaging and interactive, ensuring that children are excited about learning!
