Students will learn about the number line and how it can be used to represent numbers.
Begin by asking students if they know what a number line is. Follow up with, "Can you show me what a number line looks like?" Draw a simple number line on the board or paper and point to the first number. Ask students if they know what number comes next.
Distribute counting toys or objects to each student. Ask students to count their toys and place them on the number line according to their number. For instance, a student with three bears should place them on the number three. Repeat with different numbers.
Ask students to put their counting toys in order according to the number line. For instance, if a student has four bears and three blocks, they should put the bears on four and the blocks on three. This helps students understand how numbers can be compared and ordered.
Review the number line and its uses with students. Ask questions such as, "What is a number line used for?" and "How can we use a number line to compare numbers?" Draw a simple number line on the board or paper and have students count and order their toys again to reinforce the lesson.
