Objective:
Students will learn to count on from a given number, starting with numbers 1-5.
Materials:
- Counting cards (1-5)
- Manipulatives (e.g. blocks, beads)
- Whiteboard and markers
Introduction (2 minutes):
- Begin the lesson by reviewing numbers 1-5 with the students.
- Introduce the concept of "counting on" from a given number.
- Explain to the students that they will be learning to count on from a given number using manipulatives and counting cards.
Direct Instruction (10 minutes):
- Show the students the number cards, and ask them to name each number.
- Pick a number between 1-5, and hold up the corresponding card (e.g. "3").
- Explain to the students that they will be counting on from this number, starting with "3".
- Using the manipulatives, demonstrate counting on from "3" (e.g. "3, 4, 5").
- Have students practice counting on from "3" with you, using the manipulatives.
- Repeat this process with each number card (1-5).
Guided Practice (5 minutes):
- Divide the students into small groups.
- Give each group a number card and manipulatives.
- Instruct the students to take turns counting on from their given number, starting with the number on the card.
- Encourage students to help each other if they get stuck.
Independent Practice (3 minutes):
- Have each student choose a number card and manipulatives.
- Instruct the students to count on from their given number, starting with the number on the card.
Closure (2 minutes):
- Review the concept of "counting on" from a given number.
- Ask students to name a number and count on from it, using manipulatives.
- End the lesson by reminding students to practice counting on from different numbers at home.
