Introduction (2 minutes)
- Greet the students and introduce the topic of picture graph.
- Explain that a picture graph is a kind of chart that uses pictures to show data or information.
- Give an example of a picture graph (e.g. a chart showing the number of fruits in a basket using pictures of apples, bananas, and oranges)
Creating a Picture Graph (8 minutes)
- Show the students a blank piece of paper and tell them that we will create a picture graph together.
- Ask the students for ideas on what to graph (e.g. favorite colors, favorite animals, etc.). Choose one topic to graph.
- Divide the paper into sections and draw a picture for each section that represents the chosen topic (e.g. if the topic is favorite animals, draw a picture of a dog, a cat, and a bird).
- Ask the students to help you count how many people in the class like each picture, and write the number next to each picture.
- Use the numbers to create a bar representing each picture, and color the bar in using crayons or markers with the same color as the picture.
- Ask the students to help you interpret the completed picture graph.
Conclusion (5 minutes)
- Review what the students learned about picture graphs.
- Ask the students to think of other topics that can be graphed using pictures.
- Thank the students for their participation and end the lesson.
