Lesson Beginning: Discovering Wellness

Introduction: The Wellness Puzzle

Hook:
Imagine you are a detective, and today you have a mystery to solve—a puzzle that’s all about YOU! What does it mean to be 'well'? Wellness is more than just avoiding illness; it’s about feeling good in many areas of your life—like your body, mind, and even your social connections!

Activity: The Wellness Wheel

  1. Materials Needed:

    • Large paper or chart paper
    • Markers or colored pencils
    • Sticky notes
  2. Instructions:

    • On the large paper, draw a large circle and divide it into six equal sections like a pizza—each representing a different aspect of wellness: Physical, Emotional, Social, Intellectual, Spiritual, and Environmental wellness.
    • As a class, brainstorm what each section means. For example:
      • Physical Wellness: Eating nutritious food, being active.
      • Emotional Wellness: Recognizing feelings and managing stress.
      • Social Wellness: Building healthy relationships.
    • Once we’ve discussed each section, give each student a sticky note and ask them to write one thing they do for their wellness. They will then stick their notes on the corresponding section of the Wellness Wheel.
  3. Discussion:

    • After everyone has added their sticky notes, we’ll discuss as a class. What activities are common? Are there different ways we take care of our wellness? How can we improve our wellness wheel to make it even more balanced?

Transition:

Now that we've uncovered what wellness means and identified ways we care for ourselves, let’s explore how we can expand our wellness strategies to live our best lives. We will dive deeper into each piece of the Wellness Wheel in today’s lesson!

By framing the lesson this way, students engage actively right from the start while connecting personally with the topic!
