Lesson Plan: I Like Myself

Overview

This lesson is designed for Reception/Kindergarten students in a SEN classroom, focusing on self-esteem, acceptance, and positive self-identity. The duration of the lesson is 10 minutes and is aimed at students with autism. The activities are interactive and visual, making use of images to engage students effectively.

Objectives

Materials Needed

Introduction (2 minutes)

Begin the lesson by introducing the topic “I Like Myself”. Ask the students if they have ever thought about things they like about themselves. Explain that today they will learn why it's important to like who we are.

Reading a Picture Book

Read a short picture book that focuses on self-esteem and self-love. One good option is "I Like Me!" by Nancy Carlson. As you read, encourage students to relate to the feelings expressed in the story.

Activity 1: Mirror, Mirror (3 minutes)

Hand out small mirrors to each student. Ask them to look at themselves and say one thing they like about what they see. Encourage phrases like "I like my smile" or "I like my hair".

{The image of a child looking into a small mirror with a big smile, surrounded by soft cushions in a warm classroom setting.}

Activity 2: Draw What You Like (3 minutes)

Provide blank paper and crayons. Ask each student to draw a picture of something they like about themselves, whether it's their smile, their kindness, or something they enjoy doing.

Once completed, let a few students share their drawings with the class. This can promote self-expression and enhance social skills.

Conclusion (2 minutes)

Wrap up the lesson by reviewing the importance of liking ourselves. Encourage students to remember these positive things about themselves every day. Optionally, you can sing a simple song about self-love together to end on a joyful note.

{The image of children standing together, holding up their drawings proudly while smiling, with colourful decorations adorning the classroom walls.}
