Getting to Know You: A Geographical Adventure

Introduction

Welcome to our Geography class, explorers! Today, we’re embarking on a journey that’s not just about maps and globes, but about each other! Before we dive into the fascinating physical features of our world, let’s take a moment to get to know the incredible individuals who will share this journey with us.

The Earth’s Tapestry: A Community Map

Activity Overview

To start our adventure, we’ll create a “Community Map.” This collaborative activity will help us learn about one another’s backgrounds, interests, and what makes us unique!

Materials Needed

Steps to Create Your Community Map

  1. Gather Round: Sit in a circle around your Community Map space. This is where we’ll create a visual tapestry of our class!

  2. Find Your Place: Everyone will take a few moments to think about where they come from — this could be your hometown, a country you've visited, or even a specific cultural heritage.

  3. Draw and Share:

    • Each student will take a sticky note and write their name on it.
    • On a different sticky note, they will draw a simple symbol or picture representing their place (like a palm tree for Florida or the Statue of Liberty for New York).
    • After drawing, each student will take a turn sharing their location and the significance of their symbol with the class.
  4. Stick It Down: Once everyone has shared, we’ll place our sticky notes on the Community Map in the corresponding locations on our world map. If someone is from a different country, they can point it out on the globe together!

  5. Discussion and Reflection: As a class, we’ll discuss the different places represented on our map. Questions to consider:

    • What similarities do we share with people from different areas?
    • How does where we come from shape who we are?
    • How can understanding our classmates' backgrounds help us in our Geography studies?

Conclusion

By the end of this activity, we’ll not only know more about the world around us but also about each other! Geography is all about connections — between places and people. Let’s embrace both as we begin this exciting journey together!
