Lesson Part: Practice - Comprehension Questions for Year 11 English
Overview
In this lesson segment, students will engage in a practical exercise aimed at enhancing their comprehension skills related to narratives, interpretive texts, and visual texts. The focus will be on interpretation through the lenses of perspective, reader response, themes, purpose, language, and stylistic choices.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this practice session, students will be able to:
- Analyse and interpret various texts.
- Respond to comprehension questions using appropriate textual evidence.
- Discuss how perspective and purpose affect interpretation of the text.
Activities
Students will participate in two main activities:
- Group Discussion
- Individual Reflection and Response
1. Group Discussion (30 minutes)
- Divide Students into Small Groups: Organise the class into groups of 4-5 students.
- Distribute Texts: Provide each group with a different narrative, interpretive, or visual text (e.g., a short story, excerpts from novels, poetry, or paintings).
- Directed Questions: Encourage groups to discuss the following questions related to their texts. Each group should appoint a scribe to document their responses.
Comprehension Questions

-
Purpose:

-
Language:
- Examine a passage where the author employs distinctive language. What effect does this language have on the reader's perception of the text?

- A clear topic sentence stating their interpretation.
- Supporting evidence from the text (direct quotes or paraphrasing).
- A conclusion that connects their interpretation back to the overarching themes or purposes of the text.
Assessment
- Participation in Group Discussion: Assess the engagement and critical thinking demonstrated during group work.
- Individual Reflection: Collect and provide feedback on the written responses, focusing on the clarity of thought, textual evidence, and connection to the chosen question.
Conclusion
This practice session aims to deepen students' comprehension by encouraging active discussion and personal connection to the texts. Through group collaboration and individual reflection, students will gain diverse perspectives on literary and visual texts while honing their analytical skills in English.
