Introduction (5 Minutes)
Engage
- Begin the lesson with a question: “What do you think makes something alive?”
- Show a small plant and a toy, asking students to identify which is living and which is non-living.
Explain
- Briefly explain that living things grow, need food, breathe, and reproduce, while non-living things do not have these characteristics.
Direct Instruction (10 Minutes)
Characteristics of Living Things
- Growth: Living things grow over time.
- Need for Food: Living things need food and water.
- Breathing: Living things breathe (or take in air).
- Reproduction: Living things can make more living things.
Characteristics of Non-Living Things
- Do Not Grow: They remain the same size and shape.
- No Need for Food: They do not eat or drink.
- No Breathing: They do not take in air.
- Cannot Reproduce: They cannot make more of themselves.
Guided Practice (10 Minutes)
Sorting Activity
- Hand out the pictures of living and non-living things to each student.
- On a large piece of chart paper or whiteboard, draw two columns: “Living” and “Non-Living.”
- Call students one by one to come up, show their picture, and place it in the correct column. Discuss briefly why it belongs in that category.
Independent Practice (5 Minutes)
Living vs. Non-Living Worksheet
- Distribute the sorting activity sheets.
- Instruct students to cut out pictures and glue them under the correct headings: Living or Non-Living.
- Circulate the room to provide assistance as needed.
Closing (5 Minutes)
Review
- Recap the key points discussed about living and non-living things.
- Ask students for examples of each and encourage them to share their worksheets with the class.
Assessment
- Observe student participation during discussions and activities.
- Review the correctness of sorting in their worksheets.
Extensions
- Encourage students to bring in items from home that represent living or non-living things for an additional show-and-tell session.
- Provide a nature walk opportunity where students can observe living things in their environment.
Note
Ensure that students understand that living and non-living things can be found in their homes, schools, and natural environments, fostering their curiosity and observation skills in the world around them.
