Hello, aspiring mathematicians! Today, we’re going to dive into the fascinating world of rounding numbers. Get ready because we are going to play a fun game of Plinko to help us learn how to round to the nearest hundred!

What is Rounding?

Before we start the game, let’s quickly recap what rounding means. Rounding is a way of making a number simpler but keeping its value close to what it was. When we round to the nearest hundred, we look at the tens place to decide if we round up or down.

• If the tens place is 5 or more, we round up.
• If the tens place is 4 or less, we round down.

Plinko Game Instructions

1. Set Up the Plinko Board: Imagine a giant board with pegs, like a giant Plinko game! We will create a simple Plinko board on the whiteboard using dots to represent the pegs.

2. Drop the Chips: Each student will get a chip (you can use a small paper disc, a button, or even a crumpled piece of paper). Students will take turns dropping their chip from the top of the board.

3. Land on a Number: As the chip bounces down, make sure to call out the number it lands on—this will be the number we’ll round.

4. Round the Number: Once a chip lands on a number, we’ll work together as a class to round that number to the nearest hundred.

   • Example: If a chip lands on 234, what do we have? The digit in the tens place is 3, so we round down to 200.
   • If a chip lands on 678, the tens place is 7, so we round up to 700!
