Lesson Plan: What is the Same? What is the Difference?
Grade Level
Preschool / Nursery
Duration
30 minutes
Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Identify things that are the same.
- Recognize differences between various objects and images.
- Communicate their observations verbally.
Materials Needed
- Picture cards with various images (e.g., fruits, animals, shapes)
- Drawing paper and crayons
- A whiteboard and markers
- "Same" and "Different" posters
- Small objects for a hands-on activity (e.g., toy animals, blocks)
Introduction (5 minutes)
Begin the lesson by gathering the children in a circle. Introduce the topic by saying:
"Today, we are going to explore what is the same and what is different! We will look at pictures and objects, and we will talk about how they are alike and how they are different."
Show the "Same" and "Different" posters. Explain their meanings in simple terms:
- Same: Two or more things that are exactly alike.
- Different: Two or more things that are not alike.
Activity 1: Picture Match (10 minutes)
- Distribute picture cards to the children (ensure each child has two cards).
- Ask them to find a partner and compare their cards.
- Instruct them to find out if their cards are the same or different and to show them to each other.
- After a few minutes, gather the group and invite some children to share their findings.
Questions to Discuss
- "Who found cards that are the same?"
- "What made your cards different?"
Activity 2: Object Sorting (10 minutes)
- Use the small objects (e.g., toy animals, blocks) and place them in the center of the circle.
- Ask the children to identify objects that are the same and group them together.
- Next, ask them to group the objects that are different.
Exploration
Encourage them to explain their reasoning:
- "Why did you put these together?"
- "What makes these two animals different?"
Closing Activity: Drawing Time (5 minutes)
- Provide each child with drawing paper and crayons.
- Ask them to draw one thing that is the same and one thing that is different.
- Encourage them to share their drawings with the class, explaining what they drew and why.
Conclusion (2 minutes)
Wrap up the lesson by reviewing what the children learned:
"Today, we learned about the same and different. We looked at pictures, sorted objects, and even created our own drawings! Remember, recognizing similarities and differences helps us understand the world around us."
Assessment
Observe children during activities for understanding of key concepts. Review the drawings to assess their ability to differentiate between the same and different.
Extensions
- Introduce more complex comparisons with shapes and colors in future lessons.
- Include a reading session with books focusing on similarities and differences to reinforce the lesson further.
This lesson plan is designed to engage preschool children with interactive and hands-on learning, while also making it easy for educators to facilitate understanding of the concepts of sameness and difference.
