Lesson Plan: What is the Same?
Objective
By the end of this lesson, preschool students will be able to identify similarities among objects and categorize them based on shared characteristics.
Duration
30 Minutes
Materials Needed
- Various pairs of everyday objects (e.g., apples and oranges, blocks of different colors, balls of different sizes, etc.)
- Picture cards showing different animals, shapes, and colors
- Chart paper and markers
- Glue and scissors
- A small container for sorting objects
Introduction (5 Minutes)
Begin the lesson by gathering the children in a circle.
Prompt Questions:
- "What do we mean when we say things are the same?"
- "Can anyone give me an example of things that are the same?"
Introduce the main topic of the lesson: "Today, we are going to explore what is the same and what makes things different!"
Activity 1: Object Sorting (10 Minutes)
- Group the Children: Divide the children into small groups of 3-4.
- Distribute Objects: Give each group a mixed bag of various objects.
- Instructions: Ask the groups to work together to find objects that are the same, based on color, size, or type.
- Sorting Task: Each group will sort their objects into two piles: "Same" and "Different."
Guiding Questions:
- "What is the same about these two blocks?"
- "How can we tell these balls apart?"
Activity 2: Picture Card Matching (10 Minutes)
- Picture Cards Distribution: Hand out picture cards to each group that depict animals, shapes, or colors.
- Matching Game: Instruct the groups to find pairs of cards that are the same.
- Display Group Findings: After a few minutes, call on each group to share their matched cards with the class.
Discussion:
- Ask the children why they think the cards they matched are the same.
- Reinforce the concepts of similarity and categories.
Activity 3: "What is the Same?" Craft Time (5 Minutes)
- Craft Setup: Provide each child with chart paper and a selection of pre-cut pictures of different objects, animals, or shapes.
- Craft Instructions: Ask them to create their own collage of "things that are the same." They can glue down pictures that belong to the same category.
Encourage Creativity:
- Allow children to freely choose which pictures to use.
- Encourage conversations about their choices during the crafting.
Conclusion (5 Minutes)
Gather the children back in a circle to wrap up the lesson.
Reflection Questions:
- "What did you learn about things that are the same?"
- "Can you tell me one thing you found out that surprised you?"
Reinforce that recognizing similarities helps us make sense of our world. Thank the children for their participation and creativity!
Assessment
Observe children during group activities to assess their ability to identify and categorize items based on similarities. Use their responses during the discussion and crafts as an informal assessment of their understanding.
This lesson plan encourages interaction, communication, and hands-on learning, fostering a foundational understanding of similarity among young children.
