To introduce students to the diverse landscapes and communities in Alberta and connect them to the broader world.
At the end of the lesson, students will create a "My Dream Adventure Map" showcasing what they have learned. This will be assessed based on creativity, understanding of geographical features, and connections to local communities.
Set the Scene: Begin by gathering the students in a circle on the carpet. Present the "Mystery Box" and explain that they are going to embark on a very special adventure around the world and their own backyard!
Mystery Box Reveal: Ask one student to help you open the box. Inside, have the cut-out images of different geographical features and communities. Hold up each image one at a time and ask the class:
Connecting to Alberta: After discussing each image, take a moment to connect the features to places in Alberta. For example, when showing an image of the Rocky Mountains, mention how they are located in Alberta and are part of a beautiful landscape known for outdoor activities.
World Connections: Next, while pointing to the globe or world map, explain how these features can be found in other places around the world. What might be different or the same about these places? Encourage students to share their ideas.
Transition to Activity: Conclude the opening by telling the students that they will have the chance to create their own "My Dream Adventure Map." Explain that they will be choosing their favourite geographical features and community elements to include in their creative project, reflecting what represents Alberta and the wider world!
This engaging opening not only captivates the students' attention but also encourages their curiosity about geography. It sets a foundation for understanding the importance of landscapes and communities as they further explore the Alberta Social Studies curriculum throughout the year.
