Engaging Lesson Starter: Exploring Health Inequalities

Introduction

Welcome to today's lesson on Health Inequalities! Before we dive into the content, let's kick things off with an engaging activity that will set the stage for our discussion.

Activity: The Health Inequality Challenge

Objective

To understand the concept of health inequalities and identify various factors that contribute to them.

Materials Needed

Instructions

  1. Think-Pair-Share (5 minutes):

    • Think: Individually, take a moment to reflect on what you believe health inequalities are. Consider aspects such as socio-economic status, access to healthcare, ethnicity, and education.
    • Pair: Turn to a partner and discuss your thoughts. Share at least two potential examples of health inequalities you observe in your community or in society at large.
    • Share: After a few minutes, we will reconvene as a class. Each pair will take turns sharing one example, and I will write these on the board.
  2. Sticky Note Brainstorm (10 minutes):

    • Each student will receive a few sticky notes. On each note, write down a factor you think contributes to health inequalities. These could be related to lifestyle, environment, healthcare services, education, or social factors.
    • Once you’ve written your notes, come up to the board and stick them in clusters based on similarity (e.g., social factors, economic factors, environmental factors).
  3. Class Discussion (10 minutes):

    • Once all the sticky notes have been placed, we will take a few moments to look at the trends and clusters we’ve created.
    • Lead a class discussion by asking the following questions:
      • What common themes do you see?
      • Are there any surprising factors that you think should be included?
      • How do these factors specifically affect different communities?
