To engage students and spark interest in learning Spanish by exploring cultural connections and personal motivations.
As students enter the classroom, create an inviting atmosphere with Spanish music playing softly in the background. Consider using a popular Spanish song that is age-appropriate and culturally significant. This will help them feel immersed in the language right from the start.
Use the "Mi Vida en Palabras" exercise as an icebreaker. Provide each student with a large blank index card or a piece of colorful paper. Ask them to write down three words that describe them or are significant in their lives—these could be in their native language or in Spanish if they feel comfortable.
Once they have written their words, divide the students into small groups of 3-4. In their groups, have them share their chosen words and explain why they selected them. Encourage them to ask questions and learn from one another.
After the groups have shared, reconvene as a class. Ask a few volunteers to share one of their words and its significance. Use this as a springboard to introduce the concept of language as a way to express identity and culture.
Conclude the lesson by explaining that just as they’ve shared pieces of their identity, learning Spanish will allow them to express themselves and connect with a rich culture.
By beginning the lesson in a personal and engaging way, students will feel more connected to the subject matter and motivated to learn. The personal touch of sharing their individual stories in conjunction with the language sets a positive tone for the year ahead.
