Goal
The goal of this course is to introduce Grade 3 students to the art of Roman weaving. By the end of this course, students will be able to understand the process of Roman weaving and create their own woven masterpiece.
Aims
- To develop an appreciation of Roman art and culture.

- To understand the parts of a loom and how to operate it.
- To teach students the techniques of weaving, including warp and weft.

Lesson Plan
Lesson 1: Introduction to Roman Weaving (1 class)
- Introduce the history of Ancient Rome and its cultural importance.
- Discuss the significance of weaving in Ancient Rome and its role in the society.
- Explain the basic principles of weaving and its importance to art.
Lesson 2: Parts of a Loom (1 class)
- Learn about the different parts of a loom and how it works.
- Discuss the differences between a warp and a weft.

Lesson 3-4: Setting up the Loom (2 classes)
- Continue setting up the loom for weaving.
- Demonstrate how to warp the loom and prepare it for weaving.
- Allow students to practice warping and setting up their loom.
Lesson 5-10: Basic Weaving Techniques (6 classes)
- Introduce basic weaving techniques such as plain weave and twill weave.
- Demonstrate the proper use of the shuttle and the beater.
- Allow students to practice and experiment with these techniques through various projects.
Lesson 11-15: Advanced Weaving Techniques (5 classes)
- Introduce advanced weaving techniques such as tapestry weaving and brocade.
- Allow students to explore new techniques through various projects.
- Discuss the importance of color and texture in weaving.
Lesson 16-20: Experimentation with Materials (5 classes)
- Encourage students to experiment with different types of materials such as wool, cotton and silk.
- Discuss the importance of texture and color in choosing materials.
- Allow students to create a woven project using different materials.
Lesson 21-30: Roman Weaving Techniques (10 classes)
- Study the techniques used in Roman weaving, including the use of wool and linen.
- Discuss the process of creating fabric through weaving.
- Allow students to create a Roman-inspired woven project.
Lesson 31-40: Woven Project (10 classes)
- Allow students to plan and create their own woven project.
- Encourage experimentation with different materials, colors, and techniques.
- Provide assistance as needed to help students complete their projects.
Lesson 41-45: Finishing the Woven Project (5 classes)
- Teach the students how to take down the woven project from the loom.
- Explain the process of finishing and cleaning the woven project.
- Encourage students to display their finished projects for the class.
Lesson 46-50: Wrap up (5 classes)
- Review the techniques learned throughout the course.
- Discuss the importance of art and creativity in society.
- Encourage students to continue exploring the art of weaving outside of the classroom.
Conclusion
This course will provide Grade 3 students with a profound appreciation of the art of weaving with the focus on Roman inspired weaving. Students will learn new techniques, experiment with different materials and colors, and will be encouraged to be creative and explore their individuality with their woven projects.
