For Year/Grade 11 students (ages 16-18)
Goal
The goal of this course is to help students improve their English language skills while exploring and discussing different life experiences and their impact on individuals and society. Students will improve their comprehension, writing, and critical thinking skills through engaging activities and discussions.
Aims
The aims of this course are to:
- Encourage students to think about their own life experiences and how they shape who they are
- Develop students' vocabulary related to different life experiences
- Increase students' ability to analyze and discuss texts related to life experiences
- Help students improve their writing skills through different writing tasks related to life experiences
- Foster an appreciation for different cultures by exploring different life experiences around the world
Lesson Plan
Lesson 1: Introduction to Life Experiences
- Definition of life experiences
- Examples of life experiences
- Discussion on how life experiences shape who we are
- Vocabulary related to life experiences
Lesson 2: Life Experiences in Literature
- Analysis of literary texts related to life experiences (e.g. coming-of-age stories, memoirs, autobiographies)
- Discussion on how literature can help us understand other people's experiences
- Writing task: Reflecting on a personal life experience and connecting it to a literary text
Lesson 3: Life Experiences Across Cultures
- Discussion on life experiences in different cultures
- Vocabulary related to cultural identities and customs
- Analysis of different texts related to life experiences around the world (e.g. articles, short stories, personal narratives)
- Writing task: Describing a cultural celebration or tradition
Lesson 4: Challenges and Struggles in Life Experiences
- Discussion on different challenges and struggles individuals face in life
- Analysis of texts related to overcoming challenges and struggles
- Vocabulary related to resilience and perseverance
- Writing task: Reflecting on a challenge or struggle faced in life and how it was overcome
Lesson 5: Empathy and Understanding Through Life Experiences
- Discussion on how life experiences can help us understand and empathize with others
- Analysis of texts related to understanding other people's experiences
- Vocabulary related to empathy and understanding
- Writing task: Writing a letter to someone who has had a different life experience, expressing empathy and understanding
Conclusion
By the end of this course, students will have increased their vocabulary related to different life experiences, improved their comprehension and analytical skills, and gained a deeper appreciation for different cultures and individual experiences. They will have also had the opportunity to reflect on their own life experiences and connect them to a larger conversation on life experiences.
