By the end of this lesson, students will have a better understanding of the various techniques used in sketching and be able to apply them in their own sketches.
Have a local artist come into the classroom and demonstrate how they create a sketch. The artist could bring in their own materials and show the class how to get started on their own sketches.
Have students sketch a self-portrait. This will help them get their creative juices flowing and allow the teacher to assess their current level of artistic ability.
Begin by discussing what sketching is and how it differs from drawing. Show examples of different types of sketches such as architectural, figure, and landscape. Discuss the various techniques used in sketching such as hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, and contour drawing.
Allow the students to practice each of the techniques discussed by providing them with various subject matters such as still life objects, landscapes, and portraits. Provide students with different types of pencils and paper to experiment with their sketches.
Have students choose a subject matter of their own and create a sketch that applies the techniques learned during this lesson.
Have students share their sketches with the class and discuss the techniques they used in their sketches. This will allow them to reflect on their own work and learn from their peers.
Have students research a famous sketch artist and create a brief presentation on their life and work. This will allow them to explore the world of art beyond the classroom and gain inspiration for future sketches.
